"Can you do any better on the price?" is normal, not an insult. Often clients ask because it costs nothing to ask. A calm response keeps your margin and earns their respect.
Don't answer too quickly
An instant discount suggests your first price wasn't real. Ask a question first: "What budget did you have in mind?" or "Is it the overall price or a specific item that concerns you?"
Find the real issue
A client may be comparing you against a cheaper quote with a smaller scope. Ask to see what's included. You may be comparing different work altogether.
Trade, don't give
If you do move, get something in return:
- "I can reduce it by 5% if you pay in full upfront."
- "If we can schedule this for next month during my quiet period, I can take 5,000 off."
- "If we use this standard finish rather than the premium one, the price falls to..."
The client understands the price reflects real work, and doesn't expect automatic discounts next time.

Hold firm politely
"I understand. This price reflects the materials and time needed to do it properly, so I can't lower it for this scope. I'd be glad to look at reducing the scope instead."
Know your limit
Before discussing it, know the lowest price you can accept. Check your margin so a tense conversation doesn't push you into a loss.
When to walk away
A client who haggles hard at the start may also dispute the final bill. It's fine to say: "I don't think I'm the right fit for that budget, but I wish you all the best with the project." Time saved on bad work can go to good work.
